PLAYER'S HANDBOOK

The Reality Engine — Guided Learning Platform

Based on "The Spider's Comprehensive Handbook" (Doc 7)

Welcome, Apprentice. This handbook contains everything you need to begin your journey through 12,000 years of infrastructure history. It defines your character, your abilities, your equipment, and your path from Spider to Master Weaver. Read it before you create your character. DAVID, your Dungeon Master, will reference these rules throughout your campaign.

THE SPIDER ARCHETYPE

You begin as a Spider — the creature that searches, orders, and ranks. Just as spider bots weave the World Wide Web by crawling, indexing, and connecting, you will weave the web of civilisational knowledge. The spider sits at the centre of its web, sensing vibrations from every thread. Your journey mirrors this: from the first spark of fire to the digital age, you will connect 12 Civilisational Relays into a single fabric of understanding. The web you weave has five layers — the Natural Web (elements), the Machine Web (systems), the Information Web, the Communication Web, and the Intelligence Web — each more complex than the last. Master all five, and you become a Master Weaver.

Character creation follows the AD&D tradition. You roll dice first to determine your ability scores, then choose your name, avatar, civilisational perspective, and game mode. Only after you have formed your character identity do you take the FITS Assessment to discover your temperament. This order matters — you must invest in who your character is before discovering what they are like.

WHY AD&D?

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most successful educational frameworks ever created. It teaches resource management, strategic thinking, consequence awareness, and collaborative problem-solving — all within a narrative that makes learning feel like adventure. The Infrastructure Odyssey adapts this framework for civilisational literacy. Your character sheet is your academic profile. Your dice rolls create scenarios that test your analytical response. Your party of AI companions ensures you never face a challenge alone. And DAVID, your Dungeon Master, adapts every encounter to your learning style.

DICE ROLLING: 4d6 DROP THE LOWEST

Roll four six-sided dice, discard the lowest die, and sum the remaining three. This gives a range of 3–18 per score, with an average around 12. Repeat for all six ability scores. You may re-roll your entire set up to 3 times — choose wisely. After rolling, your FITS temperament bonuses are applied automatically, potentially pushing scores above 18.

IMPORTANT: DICE OUTCOME = 0% OF YOUR GRADE

The dice outcome is worth zero percent of your final grade. Rolling high or low does not determine your success — it determines the scenario DAVID creates for you. A low roll in Engineering Insight means DAVID gives you a harder infrastructure puzzle; a high roll means a more complex analytical challenge. Both paths lead to the same XP potential. The dice create risk and chance — the twin engines of every great civilisation. Your grade comes from how you respond to the scenario, not from the roll itself.

MUST-KNOW THRESHOLDS

Each relay has Must-Know content — the minimum knowledge every player must demonstrate regardless of dice rolls, perspective, or game mode. Must-Know items are non-negotiable. Failing to meet them means the relay is incomplete. They include:

  • Core infrastructure innovation and its engineering principles
  • Key historical figures and their contributions
  • The civilisational impact (social, economic, environmental)
  • At least one modern parallel or legacy application
  • The relay's connection to the next relay in the chain

MASTERY BONUSES

Beyond Must-Know, players who demonstrate deeper engagement earn Mastery Bonuses. These reward cross-relay synthesis, original analysis, and creative application:

  • Cross-Relay Connection: Identify how one relay's innovation enabled or depended on another
  • Counterpart Analysis: Compare Western, Eastern, and Outrider approaches to the same relay
  • Modern Application: Propose how ancient engineering principles solve contemporary problems
  • Biomimicry Insight: Connect natural systems to infrastructure design
  • Ethical Reflection: Analyse the social consequences of infrastructure decisions
